Belgium’s Abandoned Tunnel of Buses – Richard Huntjens Photography

Save for the United States – where public transportation is largely frowned upon – the world is absolutely riddled with buses. They’re cheap, they’re reasonably fast (usually), and they cut down the amount of drivers on the road by a significant amount.

Eventually, though, they wear out and die. Sometimes it’s because they’ve lived a long life serving passengers. Sometimes it’s just because they’ve been left to disrepair, or even simply because the technology is outdated, and the bus company has decided to upgrade to electric buses… a man can dream, right? In any case, if you’re a bus ready for retirement in Belgium, you may be shuttled away into this warm, cozy, unfinished metro tunnel.

Into the Darkness…

abandoned bus in tunnel

Some of these buses, like the one pictured above, look like they’ve served a great many people over the years. Yes, much like drivers well into their 70s, it’s probably for the best that this old fella was pulled off the road.

destroyed bus

Imagine the story that goes with this particular bus, or rather… half a bus. I hope it was something simple, like someone dropping a heavy iron beam on the (empty) bus, and not some terrible traffic accident. Yikes!

old trolly car

I hope this has been down here a long time, because if Belgium had been using this until recently… cripe man. Good for the tourists maybe, but not much else.

shiny new bus

Then you see buses like this; shiny, new, and completely out of place. What did this bus do to deserve such an early burial? Hell, this thing looks nicer than have the active buses here in Montreal.

Who knew buses and old timey cars could be so interesting? A talented photographer and explorer like Richard Huntjens can accomplish some really beautiful work, that’s for damn sure. I’m a sucker for abandoned places, but even then… pretty neat, eh
