Animated Comic Covers – Retro Movement by Kerry Callen

I’m a pretty big comic buff, and though I have a decidedly set style of new artwork that I’m drawn to, classic covers still hold a cherished place in my heart. Sometimes, those old covers are so much more evocative than a flat page can express- like, for example, the picture above. Can’t you imagine the gas wafting around our heroes? Tears leaking from Captain America’s eyes? One of the characters in the background shuffling his feet in embarrassment and trying to look innocent? Fart jokes aside, Kerry Callen’s animated comic covers actually add movement to some old favorites, and the results are truly awesome. This post is full of animated GIFS, (super cool ones, not Geocities spinning ball and floppy disk ones) so you’ve been warned…. Check them out!

Animated Comic Covers – A Retro Movement by Kerry Callen

Much like the animated cinemagraphs we posted some time back, these animated comic covers are the perfect balance of movement that give each scene just a little extra oomph. It’s great to see some time and effort put into breathing a touch of new life into classic art that could use a bit of modernizing; it is an awesome way to see the original drawings preserved and made ‘more interesting’ for those of us from an age where everything needs to be digital to snag our attention. Kerry Callen puts considerable effort into creating classic golden age style comic art, re-imagining famous comic panels and covers in his own fantastic style, and a posts a number of other amusing drawings over at his blog.

Author, Designer, and "that girl your mother warned you about." Looking good seems to be my job, whether it's working with the site design, or a number of other more interesting capacities. I have a ridiculous sense of humour and a brutal sense of honesty- you'll see a lot of that coming through in my writing, so don't say I didn't warn you if I somehow manage to offend you AND hurt your feelings at the same time. On the plus side, it makes my dating and advice columns a lot more pertinent to an unfinished man in the real world.
