Adventuring in Antarctica — The Memories Will Outlive the Polar Ice Cap

If you’re looking for a once-in-a-lifetime adventure, here’s an idea: Antarctica.

Anyone can get on a plane and visit a city. Many people seek outdoor adventures or go white-water rafting in various parts of the world… but think of it! The South Pole! Santa aka St. Nicholas or Kris Kringle, for interested parties, hails from the North.

By the way, if you are concerned about melting polar ice caps, it’s an especially good time to visit. You may not have the chance for much longer.

So with that in mind, here are a few suggestions of items to take along, what to wear, and things to do on this amazing trip!

Dressing Appropriately for Antarctica

Occasionally, people get stumped about the question of what to wear for an event or on a vacation. In this case, we’re pretty sure that really warm clothing, e.g. extreme weather survival-type gear, is the way to dress. Don’t bring items that aren’t intended for mere extremely cold weather because this is Antarctica and the seals will just laugh at you.

Preparing for the extreme winds and freezing temperatures makes good sense before exploring the terrain.

Start with the basics and think “layers” because layering conserves body heat. Start with extreme weather socks and “Polar fleece” everything. Don a wind-proof jacket to protect yourself from precipitation whilst locking in the warmth. Make sure to add boot-liners and heavy-duty mountain boots to your travel gear.

Of course, any true adventurer considers the accessories needed for form and function. Don’t forget sunshades (or sun goggles) and liners for gloves and boots. These special extreme weather liners create a thin, weightless barrier to keep you warm. Make sure to take photos of yourself in these gear, too. People will rave about how cool you look – never mind how warm you are!

The Best Time to Visit

Most likely, you’re wondering about the best time to visit this extremely amazing polar wonderland.

Because Antarctica is south of the equator, the “seasons” are the mirror-opposite of those in the Northern hemisphere. The best months for a visitor to Antarctica are between November and March. Lots of other visitors from the animal kingdom visit around this time, too. Whales take advantage of the “thaw” and come to court their mates. Each whale’s song is distinct from all others on the planet and it’s amazing sight to whales at play!

Plan to sleep light in Antarctica: the days are extra long at around 20 hours!

Travel Companions, New Friends

Plan on bringing a friend to Antarctica because this experience is one to share. To be honest, however, visitors to Antarctica don’t have the option of taking a private plane there… the best way to arrive in Antarctica style is by cruise ship.

Hurtigruten is a pre-eminent company offering Antarctica cruises. Remember, a trip like this is going to make memories and, as you explore a place few have the chance to visit, you will meet new people, too. That can be a good thing if you’re tired of or peeved by current travel companions.

Antarctica Activities
Cross the Antarctic Circle or look at the amazing array of wildlife: Antarctica is an adventurer’s paradise on foot or by helicopter!

Or by Kayak, of course. This is going to be the best vacation, ever.
