2014 Mazda6 In All Its Glory

Okay, the picture you see above is what everybody was hoping for when Mazda released the final details on their 2014 Mazda6. The vehicle pictured above is the 2011 Takeri concept which the Mazda6 is based on. Although the 2014 Mazda6 is certainly inspired by the concept, I think people were hoping for something…..more?

The 2014 production model of the Mazda6 may not be as aggressive as we were expecting, it is still considerably more handsome than the Toyota Camry and Honda Accord in my opinion. Improvements have been made throughout the vehicle including exterior, interior, and new technologies to reduce fuel consumption. In Europe, the 2014 Mazda6 will also be available as a station wagon.

The next generation model will be 4.1 inches longer than the previous model, at 111.4 inches in total wheelbase allowing for more cargo space, shoulder room, knee clearance, and leg room. The front wheels on the new Mazda6 have also been moved forward by 3.9 inches which has resulted in a reduced front overhang. The interior on the new ‘6’ also features more soft touch materials in areas that are frequently touched such as the upper dashboard panel as well as the door trims.

According to the company, the new Skyactiv-body structure makes better and wider use of ultra-high tensile steel which helps reduce overall weight, while also improving rigidity by 30%.

Newly designed Mazda 6

The 2014 Mazda6 will be making its debut at the 2012 Moscow Motor Show. The Russian model will initially be offered in two new engine options. The first is the Skyactiv-G 2.0-liter engine which produces 148 horsepower and 155 lb-ft of torque. The Skyactiv-G 2.5-liter will produce 189 horsepower and 189 lb-ft of torque. Each engine will be available with a six-speed manual or automatic transmission. The i-stop idling stop system will be standard on both models.

The 2.5-liter engine will be Mazda’s first deployment of the new i-ELOOP brake energy regeneration system which begins charging a capacitor as soon as the driver takes their foot off of the accelerator. The stored electricity is then used to power electric components in the car which help in improving fuel economy. That’s just another small way in which owners can save money over an extended period of time.

No details are yet available on the pricing yet. Details on the European version as well as the station wagon will be released at the Paris Motor Show in late September. I’d be interested to see the details of the sporty, Mazda Speed version of this vehicle. Stay tuned for more details.
